One day I was setting in the local library, I started to read a medical encyclopedia that was lying on the table in front of me. The first illness I read about was cholera. As I read the list of symptoms, it occurred to me that perhaps I had cholera myself. I sat for a while, too frightened to move.

Then, in a kind of dream, I started to turn the pages of the book again. I came to malaria. Yes, there was no doubt about it – I had malaria too. And I certainly had hepatitis. And yellow fever. And so it went on. I read through the whole book, and by the end I came to the conclusion that I had every illness. There was only one illness I didn’t have – and that was housemaid’s knee.
I sat and thought, and I became more and more worried. I wondered how long I had to live. I examined myself. I felt my pulse. At first, I couldn’t find it at all; then, suddenly it seems start off. I looked at my watch to time it – it was beating 147 times a minute. I tried to feel my heart. I couldn’t feel it. It wasn’t beating. I stuck my tongue out and tried to look at it. I could only see the end of it, but from that I was even more certain than before that I had yellow fever.

I went straight to my doctor, who was a good friend of mine. “What’s the matter with you?” he asked. “I have every illness in the medical encyclopedia.” I told him how I read the medical encyclopedia. Then he opened my mouth and looked at my tongue, and he felt mu pulse, and he listened to my heart. Then he sat down and wrote a prescription. It said:
o 3 good meals every day
o A two-mile walk every day morning
o Be in bed at 11 o’clock every night
o Don’t read medical books!
I followed the doctor’s instructions, and I am happy to say that I now feel quite well again.

Text 2: Explanation

All planes need air to presure under their wings to stay up in the air. As they move forward. The higher air pressure underneath their wings pushes them upward and gives them lift.
The smooth, streamlined shape of the plane allows the air to flows easily over its surface. This helps to reduce the drag caused by the air pushing against the plane and allows it to move rapidly through the air.
Planes move forward using engines. This movement is called thrust. Moving forward keeps a stream of moving air passing over the wings. If the engines fail, theplanes will begin to descend very quickly.

Eragon

One day, a young farm boy named Eragon nds a blue stone while hunting and tries to sell it for money. Unsuccessful in his attempts, he takes the stone back to his cabin and lets it sit there until it hatches into a beautiful blue dragon. Eragon realises he can talk to this secret pet dragon with his mind, and eventually learns that he and the dragon are part of a legacy of secret heroes called the Riders.
With the help of Brom, a wise man, Eragon matures into his destiny. The challenges he face include fighting
along-standing war, helping an ethereal elf, and dealing with tragedy and revenge. Certain details, such as Eragon’s revelation that he cannot read, develop this rich work and blend together to produce a number of plot twists. The story builds suspensesteadily until the end.
Remarkably, author Christopher Paolini began writing Eragon at the age of 15. Now 19, he has already established himself as an exciting new creator whose influences include Tolkien, McCaffrey, and others. His world is intricate, his characters believable, and his writing engaging.
Both casual readers and hardcore fans of fantasy and science fiction novels will be enchanted by this well crafted fantasy and unquestionably will look forward to parts two and three of this exciting trilogy.— Reviewed by Amy Alessio

Every year thousands of people die, due to wheather related problems. This has been a particular problem in Europe over the last few years. It can happen in both winter and in summer. Let’s examine the causes for a moment.
The year 2003 was a time of extreme cold in the winter. Extreme, that is by European standards. In Britain alone, the number of people who died from cold-related illnesses was described as ‘shameful’. Nearly twenty-five thousand people died from illnesses such as strokes, heart attacks, bronchitis, flu and pneumonia. Each of these deaths were though to have been caused by the cold weather. A campaign called ‘The cold can kill’ was launched to give people advice on how to survive the effects of t he cold wheather and freezing temperatures.
In the summer of t he same year, around twenty-three thousand people died in Europe due to the sizzling temperatures. France was particulary badly hit, with nearly fifteen thousand death which were related to the sweltering heat. In Britain, the number of heat-related death was much lower than the number of winter deaths. Even so, with temperatures reaching 38oC, the government issued advice to people on how to protect their health. This advice warned that it only took two consecituve days of high temperatures to have significant effects on people’s health. It said that people who became overheated and dehydrated ran the risk of irreversible damage to the body or even death.

The Buyat Bay, issue has been a hot topic these past two weeks.

The issue started when a non-governmental organization discovered that a number of people living near the bay in South Minahasa district, North Sulawesi province, were suffering from skin diseases.
Blood tests showed that some had high levels of mercury in their blood.

Each society has its own beliefs, attitudes, customs, behaviours, and social habits. These give people a sense of who they are, how they should behave, and what they should or should not do. These 'rules' reflect the 'culture' of a country.
People become conscious of such rules when they meet people from different cultures. For example, in some. cultures, being on time can mean turning up several hours late for an appointment, even for a business meeting; in others, 3 p.m. means 3 p.m. Also, the rules about when to eat vary from culture to culture. Many North Americans and Europeans are used to having three mealtimes a day and organizing their timetable around them. In some countries, on the other hand, people often do not have strict rules like this - people eat when they want to and every family has its own time table.
When people visit or live in a country for the first time, they are often surprised at the differences that exist between their own culture and that in the other country. The most common way of comparing two cultures is in terms of their differences - not their similarities.
